Power Definition

In physics, the amount of energy carried by an object in unit time is called power. To calculate the power SI unit used to represent is Watt (w), equal to the joules per second (J/s). As the power depends on the work done by an object, it is a scalar quantity. Moreover, you may see a device having a Horsepower (hp) because the motor vehicle and machine's power is measured in HP, whereas 745 watts are equivalent to 1HP.

Suppose a truck has work done of 7000 Joules in 3 minutes, then find out the power applied.

Given data

Work = 7000 J
Time = 3 min = 180 sec

To Find

Power = ?

Solution

To find out the power consumed by a truck, we will use the formula listed below:

P = W / T

Putting values in the formula:

P = 7000 / 180 = 38.88 J/s
