Average Definition

In mathematics, the term average is defined as the central value obtained by dividing a set of digits by the total number of digits used in a set. It is also known as the arithmetic mean. For example, to find the average value of a set of {7, 5, 9, 10, 16}, firstly, we will add all the digits in a set with each other, 7+3+9+10+16 = 45. After adding all the digits, we divide the total sum of integers/digits by the total number of digits used in a set. In this example, the total number used in a set is 5. To get the average value, we will divide, 45 / by 5 = 9. So the average value of the above example will be 9.

Example

Suppose there are 3 three lions in the same cage having different weights, the weight of each lion is listed below:

Given data

Weight of first lion = 80 kg
Weight of the second lion = 71 kg
Weight of third lion = 90 kg

To Find

average weight of these lions = ?

Solution

To find the average weight of these lions, we can use the formula listed below:

average = sum of numbers / number of units

Putting values in the formula:

average = 80 + 71 + 90 / 3 = 80.3 kg
